City-Wide Back-2-School Bash Happening Saturday, August 3

The City of Lubbock is hosting the 2024 City-Wide Back-2-School Bash with Texas Tech University at the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center on Saturday, August 3 from 2:00 – 6:00 PM.

A coalition of more than 60 agencies and organizations have worked together to plan this historic event. Texas Tech University College Connect has donated 5,000 backpacks that will be filled with school supplies and hygiene items to be given away to any K-12 student! There will be clear/mesh backpacks as well as regular backpacks to fit the various policies of each school. It is important to note that backpacks are on a first come, first serve basis while supplies last and that children must be present in order to receive a backpack.

In addition to providing free backpacks and school supplies to children, this event will also host a community resource fair so families can learn about important resources available throughout the Lubbock and West Texas area to ensure their student has a successful school year.

The City of Lubbock Health Department will also be on-site to administer required immunizations for your child for the upcoming school year. While children can be looked up to determine if they need any vaccines, it would create a much smoother process if you are able to bring shot records to the clinic. Immunizations through the no cost Texas Vaccines for Children Program (TVFC) will also be available for children who are:
•    Between ages 4-18
•    Uninsured
•    Receive Medicaid or CHIP benefits
•    American Indian
•    Native Alaskan

This event will also feature free food, giveaways, haircuts, entertainment, and lots of family-friendly fun!

If anyone needs assistance to get the Civic Center for this event, Citibus is partnering with the Lubbock Public Library to provide free bus transportation throughout the summer. In 2023, a group of eight agencies and non-profit organizations (Amerigroup, Catholic Charities, First Care, Hub City Outreach Center, Lubbock Public Library, MCH Family Outreach, South Plains Community Action Association, and St. Francis Ministries) had a vision to combine efforts to create one large back-to-school event for the Lubbock community. After months of planning, this resulted in the Inaugural City-Wide Back-2-School Bash that took place at Mahon Library. This event exceeded all expectations with over 2,000 stuffed backpacks handed out to children and a record number of people coming through the library doors. Thanks to the hard work of the original team for creating such a successful event, it became apparent that the idea for a collaborative, city-wide event needed to grow in both venue and scope. Dozens of other agencies were invited to participate in the planning process and the Lubbock Public Libraries stepped in on behalf of the City of Lubbock to manage and host the event at the Civic Center.

The 2024 City-Wide Back-2-School Bash takes place at the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center, 1501 Mac Davis Lane on Saturday, August 3 from 2:00 – 6:00 PM. More information and updates about this event can be found at www.lubbocklibrary.com/city-wide-back-2-school-bash
