Jalin Conyers named to Mackey Award watch list
NEW YORK – Texas Tech senior tight end Jalin Conyers was named to the 2024 John Mackey Award preseason watch list, announced by the organization’s selection committee on Friday. The Mackey Award is given annually to the most outstanding collegiate tight end.
Conyers, a 6-4, 265 lb. transfer from Arizona State, returns to his home of West Texas for his last collegiate season of eligibility remaining with the Red Raiders. The Gruver, Texas native is expected to provide an immediate boost to an already deep tight end room. Conyers had 30 catches for 362 receiving yards last year for the Sun Devils with 288 of those yards gained after the catch, which ranked in the top 10 nationally among tight ends, according to Pro Football Focus.

Conyers has played in 34 games over the last three seasons for the Sun Devils and combined for 74 catches, 846 yards and six touchdowns in his ASU career. His 74 career receptions at Arizona State ranked sixth-most all-by a tight end at the program at the time of his departure. He also was utilized as a quarterback in the Wildcat formation, rushing 22 times for 92 yards and a touchdown.

Conyers is one of 48 players named to the Mackey Award watch list in 2024. The organization’s selection committee will name eight semifinalists on Oct. 29 and then determine three finalists, which will be announced on Nov. 26. The winner of the 2024 Mackey Award will be announced live on The Home Depot College Football Awards on Dec. 12, 2024.

The last Red Raider to be recognized by the organization as a semifinalist was Jace Amaro, named in 2013 after initially not being placed on the preseason watch list. Amaro was the first Red Raider in school history to be named a semifinalist for the Mackey Award.

ABOUT THE MACKEY AWARD
The Mackey Award is presented to the nation’s most outstanding tight end by the Friends of John Mackey. During his playing days, John “Mack Truck” Mackey was known for his tremendous speed and power.  As a player, Mackey revolutionized the tight-end position when he entered the NFL with the Baltimore Colts in 1963. He was a three-time All-NFL Player and was named to the NFL’s All-Decade Team and to the league’s 50th Anniversary Squad. Mackey was just the second true tight end to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
