Mason Montgomery Promoted by Rays

TAMPA BAY – After being drafted in the sixth round of the 2021 MLB Draft and nearly 100 MiLB appearances, former Texas Tech left-hander Mason Montgomery was called up to the big leagues Thursday, as the lefty made his debut in Tampa Bay’s 4-3 loss to Minnesota.

A native of Austin, Montgomery had made 31 appearances in 2023 for AAA Durham, striking out 105 batters in 87.2 innings pitched.

After making 14 starts this season for the Bulls, Montgomery moved into the bullpen in August, where he didn’t allow a run in 10.2 innings. Montgomery allowed just five hits and did not allow a hit over his final 5.2 innings pitched. Flashing his patented plus fastball and off-speed stuff, Montgomery struck out 21 batters over the 10.2 innings of work.

Appearing in the eighth inning, Montgomery pitched a scoreless frame and recorded his first career punchout. By making his debut on Thursday, Montgomery became the 38th Red Raider all-time to make his MLB debut and the third this season, joining Clayton Beeter (March; Yankees) and Jace Jung (August; Tigers).
