No. 2 Tech Completes Midweek Sweep of Southern

Red Raiders have outscored their opponents 88-16 at home this season

LUBBOCK, Texas – The No. 2 Texas Tech baseball team continued its dominance at home with a 10-3 victory over Southern on Wednesday at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park, completing the midweek sweep.

For the second day in a row, the Red Raiders (8-1) overwhelmed the Jaguars (2-5) early with two in the first and five in the second to carry a 7-1 lead into the third. Tech added two in the fourth and another in the fifth to pad its lead.

This marks the third time in the last four years Tech has swept its first two-game midweek series of the season. The Red Raiders are now 6-0 at home and have outscored their opponents 88-16 at Rip Griffin Park.

Sophomore Hunter Dobbins (1-0) struck out a career-high 10 batters over 5.0 innings in his first start of the season. It marked the most strike outs by a Red Raider this season as he spread out two runs on five hits with two walks.

Veterans Dylan Neuse and Brian Klein paced the lineup on Wednesday with Neuse going 4-for-5 with three RBI and Klein adding a 2-for-3 effort with three runs. Freshman Nate Rombach also scored three times and drove in a run while posting a 1-for-3 performance.

Southern held a brief 1-0 lead after the top-half of the first, but the Red Raiders responded quickly. With a man on first and two away, back-to-back doubles from Rombach and Neuse flipped the score in Tech’s favor, 2-1, heading to the second.

More two-out magic occurred in the second, starting with RBI singles from Klein and sophomore Cole Stilwell that made it 4-1. After an error on a throw from short brought in a run, Neuse made it 6-1 with his second RBI in the first two innings. Junior Braxton Fulford added one more with a bases-loaded walk, one of four walks in the game for Fulford which marks a career high.

Fulford knocked in two more runs in the fifth with a one-out single to right center, and Neuse pushed the scoring to double figures in the fifth with a two-out RBI single to center.

The Red Raiders go back on the road with three games in Tallahassee, Fla., over the weekend. Tech starts by taking on Florida Atlantic at 1 p.m. Friday before a pair of rematches with 2019 College World Series opponent and ninth-ranked Florida State at 5 p.m. Saturday and 12 p.m. Sunday. Both matchups against Florida State will appear on ACC Network Extra and the Watch ESPN app.
