No. 6 Red Raiders Shut Out Bulls to Clinch Series
Dru Baker

LUBBOCK, Texas – No. 6 Texas Tech baseball received seven shutout innings from Patrick Monteverde and two more from Micah Dallas to tally an 8-0 victory over South Florida on Saturday afternoon at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.

The Red Raiders (18-4) clinch the series win and continue their impressive clip in the month of March as they roll into their final contest of the month with a 15-1 mark since the last flip of the calendar.

Monteverde (5-0) and Dallas combined for 12 strikeouts and allowed just one Bull to reach third base as they scattered seven hits and received strong play behind the plate from Braxton Fulford to help eliminate multiple base runners.

Offensively, Dru Baker and Dylan Neuse led seven Red Raiders with hits as the duo combined for seven of the club’s 13 on the day. Six different Red Raiders scored a run, and Braxton Fulford added the game’s only home run in the eighth inning.

Tech established its dominance quickly as Monteverde struck out the side in the first inning, needing only 10 pitches to do so, all of which were strikes. Two batters into the home half of the frame, Tech already had its first run as Neuse opened with a single and Cal Conley followed with a double. Conley hustled to turn his base hit into a double, and Neuse made an alert read to score as the throw got away.

The Red Raiders added onto the lead with a run in the third, fourth, sixth and seventh to make it a 6-0 game going into the eighth. Jace Jung, who reached base for the 22nd consecutive game to start the season, drew a leadoff walk, and Braxton Fulford delivered a two-out blast to left to cap off the win.

Baker finished 4-for-5 for his second-career four hit game. Neuse went 3-for-4 with two runs to notch his second three-hit game of the season. For Fulford, the home run was his fifth of the year to mark a career high for home runs in a season, topping the four he hit in 2019.

This was the third time in six starts Monteverde has posted 7.0 scoreless innings, nine strikeouts, no walks. He now has 39 strikeouts to three walks in 38.0 innings this season.

The series finale between the Red Raiders and Bulls has been moved up to a 12 p.m., first pitch on Sunday. Left-hander Mason Montgomery (1-0, 3.18 ERA) will be on the mound for the Red Raiders against right-hander Collin Sullivan (0-0, 6.30 ERA) for South Florida. Coverage will be available on Big 12 Now on ESPN+ and on the radio from the Texas Tech Sports Network.
