Red Raiders Fall in Day Two of Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic

LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech (14-10) dropped games against UTEP (5-11) and Tarleton State (11-15) on the second day of the 10th annual Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic at Rocky Johnson Field.


Freshman Arriana Villa tallied seven RBI off three home runs on the day with two long balls against UTEP and one against Tarleton State.


Texas Tech 8, UTEP 9 

A five-run first inning from the Miners put the Red Raiders in a hole early. A bases loaded walk brought in the first UTEP run and was followed by an RBI single to plate another. A line shot to center field was caught by a diving Karli Hamilton, but another run scored after tagging up at third. A single and a sac fly scored the final two runs of the inning for the early 5-0 lead.


The Red Raiders got one back in the bottom half of the inning as Ellie Bailey drove in Yvonne Whaley on a groundout to short.


Tech added another run in the bottom of the third off another RBI from Bailey who reached on a fielder’s choice to second, scoring Whaley from third.


UTEP pushed the lead back to five in the top of the fourth with an RBI double down the left field line to score one run. The next Miner batter drove in the runner on second with a single to center field, giving UTEP the 7-2 lead.


A leadoff home run from Villa in the bottom of the fourth gave the Red Raiders some life. Kelcy Leach then singled through the left side and an error allowed Riley Love to reach base putting two on with two outs for Whaley. Whaley knocked bases clearing double down the left field line to pull Tech back within two at 7-5.


Another UTEP run came across in the fifth, inching the lead back out to three.


Back-to-back walks from Peyton Blythe and Bailey put two runners on for Villa, as the Miners made a pitching change. Villa sent the first pitch from the new UTEP arm over the center field wall for her second home run of the day to tie the game at eight.


The Miners answered the next inning with a solo home run to left to regain the lead at 9-8, a score that would become final after the Red Raiders were retired in order in the seventh.


Missy Zoch (6-3) pitched the final 3.1 innings of the contest, picking up her third loss of the season in the circle. She entered the game in relief of Kamryn Caldwell in the fourth inning after Caldwell went 3.2 innings giving up two runs. Morgan Hornback started the game for the Red Raiders but was pulled in the first inning after surrendering five runs without recording an out.


Texas Tech 9, Tarleton State 11 (8 inn.) 

The Red Raiders opened up the game with a four-run first inning off an RBI single from Bailey and Villa’s third home run of the day. A leadoff single from Whaley and a walk from Hamilton put runners on the corners for Bailey who singled through the left side to send one run home. The next at-bat Villa sent her third home run of the season over the left center wall to make it 4-0 in favor of the Red Raiders.


Tarleton State got one run back in the second inning off an RBI single to right that scored a runner from third who reached base on a triple.


A home run from Kennedy Crites in the bottom of the fourth put the Red Raiders up by four, 5-1.


A six-run fifth inning gave Tarleton State its first lead of the day. A walk and back-to-back singles loaded up the bases with no outs. The next batter singled up the middle, scoring two runs and moved to second on the throw home. A three-run home run to left field gave the Texans the 7-5 lead and ended Erin Edmoundson’s day in the circle.


Tech tied the game at seven in the bottom half of the inning, drawing five walks in the inning to score two runs.


After both teams tallied a run in the sixth and went scoreless in the seventh the game went to extra innings tied at eight.


Using international tiebreak rules, a runner started on second base to lead off the eighth inning. The Texans runner moved to third on a groundout and scored off an infield single. Two more runs came in after a pair of singles to give Tarleton State an 11-8 lead.


A single up the middle from Peyton Blythe moved Abbie Orrick to third in the Red Raider half of the inning. Whaley then doubled to left field, scoring Orrick to make it 11-9 as Blythe advanced to third. The next two Red Raiders were retired, ending the game in an extra inning loss for Tech.


Hornback (1-2) was given the loss after pitching 3.2 innings and surrendering four runs. Edmoundson went 4.1 innings with seven strikeouts, allowing seven runs.

The Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic comes to a close Sunday afternoon with a double header against Tarleton State starting at noon.
