Sam Courtwright Selected for USYNT U-20 FIFA World Cup Roster

CHICAGO – 2023 Big 12 Freshman of the Year and Third Team All-American Sam Courtwright added another personal achievement Thursday, as the Dallas native was selected to USYNT U-20 roster for the upcoming 2024 U-20 FIFA World Cup (Aug. 31-Sept. 22).

Held every two seasons, the U-20 FIFA Women’s World Cup will be hosted by Columbia this year after the 2022 event took place in Costa Rica.

The United States will be making their 11th all-time appearance at the event after qualifying by making the final of the 2023 CONCACAF Women’s U-20 Championship.

The USYNT has won three previous FIFA U-20 World Cups in 2002, 2008 and most recently in 2012. The 24 team field includes:

Each of the 24 teams in the field for the 2024 U-20 World Cup will be put in four-team groups, as the US were paired with Spain, Paraguay and Morrocco.

The United States will open the 2024 competition on Sept. 1 against Spain before closing the group stage of the event with matchups against Morrocco (Sept. 4) and Paraguay (Sept. 7).

The top-two finishers from the six groups (10 total teams) and the top four third place finishers from each group will form the tournaments Round of 16 to be contested on Sept. 11-12.

The eight winners of the Round of 16 will meet in the Quarterfinals on Sept. 15. The semifinals of the event will be contested on Sept. 18 with the Third-Place match and Championship match set for Sept. 21 and 22 respectively.
