Sami Ward Completes Softball Coaching Staff

Texas Tech head softball coach Sami Ward adds Randy Ward and Brittany Miller to coaching staff.

LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech softball head coach Sami Ward has announced the hiring of Randy Ward and Brittany Miller to fill out her inaugural coaching staff for the 2021 season.

Ward will act as the Associate Head Coach of the Red Raiders in charge of hitters and infielders while Miller will serve as the pitching coach. Both Ward and Miller were on Coach Ward’s staff at Loyola Marymount.

“I am so grateful to add both Randy and Brittany to our Tech softball coaching staff,” said Ward. “Both are masters at skill and human development. When I was in my interview process, I said I would hire the best assistants possible, and that is what you will find in Brittany and Randy. We are blessed to have them here.”

Ward, husband of head coach Sami Ward, comes to Lubbock after five seasons as Associate Head Coach at Loyola Marymount where he served primarily as the hitting coach for the Lions. In his first season, Ward’s work with the LMU hitters paid off as the Lions led the nation in doubles (106) and the West Coast Conference in six offensive categories. His success continued over the next four seasons seeing multiple hitters lead the conference in hits, batting average, RBI, doubles and home runs.

Prior to his time at LMU, Ward made stops at Academy of Art University, Saint Mary’s, North Dakota and University of Northern Iowa. Ward made his coaching debut as the assistant coach at North Iowa Area Community College before becoming the head coach at Nora Springs Rock Falls High School in Nora Springs, Iowa.

Ward graduated with a bachelor’s degree in family services from Northern Iowa in 2005.

Miller joins the Red Raiders staff after spending the past four seasons at Loyola Marymount. While in Los Angeles, Miller helped the Lions’ pitchers lead the WCC in earned run average in 2018 and 2019. During LMU’s 2019 campaign pitchers Samantha Manti and Hannah Bandimere each recorded a sub-3.00 ERA while finishing tops of the conference in strikeouts with a combined 254 K’s. Under Miller’s guidance Bandimere twice earned All-West Coast Conference First Team honors (2018, 2019) and was named WCC Co-Pitcher of the Year in 2018.

Before joining the LMU coaching staff, Miller spent four seasons as the pitching coach at Iowa State. She began her coaching career as a graduate assistant at North Dakota State before being named assistant coach of the Bison. Miller helped the Bison to Summit League Tournament Championships and NCAA tournament appearances in each of her three seasons in Fargo.

Miller (neé Weil) was a four-time All-Big Ten selection as a pitcher at Iowa from 2006-09 where she was named NFCA First Team All-Region and Second Team All-American in her senior season. She was drafted seventh overall in the 2009 National Pro Fastpitch draft to the Akron Racers.
