PHILADELPHIA – Texas Tech senior quarterback Tyler Shough was named to the 2023 Maxwell Award preseason watch list on Monday. The annual award, presented by the Maxwell Football Club, is given to the most outstanding player in college football.
Shough enters the 2023 season – his sixth as a collegiate quarterback – owning an 8-1 career record as Texas Tech’s starting quarterback. Upon return from an injury suffered in the 2022 season opener, Shough led the Red Raiders to win each of their final four games last season. The Red Raiders were a perfect 5-0 in games Shough started a year ago, which was capped by earning Most Valuable Player honors at the TaxAct Texas Bowl following the Red Raiders’ 42-25 win versus Ole Miss.
Shough is poised to build on his 2022 season in 2023 under second-year offensive coordinator Zack Kittley, which will be the first time in his collegiate career to work under the same coordinator for back-to-back seasons. Shough finished his 2022 campaign with 1,304 passing yards and seven touchdowns on 106-of-177 passing (59.9 percent). He is completing 63.9 percent of his passes (288-of-451) for his career as he’s totaled 3,879 passing yards and 29 touchdowns between his first three seasons at Oregon and his last two as a Red Raider.
Shough is among a list of 85 players recognized from coast to coast, including 2022 winner Caleb Williams (USC) and seven additional returning semifinalists, Brock Bowers (Georgia), Drake Maye (North Carolina), Marvin Harrison Jr. (Ohio State), Bo Nix (Oregon), Cameron Rising (Utah), Michael Penix Jr. (Washington) and Blake Corum (Michigan).
The Maxwell Award has been presented to the College Player of the Year since 1937 and is named in honor of Robert “Tiny” Maxwell who was a former standout at Swarthmore College and a renowned sportswriter and football official.
Semifinalists for the Maxwell Award will be announced on Nov. 13, 2023, while the three finalists for the Maxwell Award will be unveiled on Nov. 28, 2023. The winners of the 87th Maxwell Award will be announced as part of the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards Show held on Dec. 7, 2023. The formal presentations of the Maxwell Award will be made at the Maxwell Football Club Awards in March 2024.
