Texas Tech Falls to Baylor in Extra Innings

The loss gave Baylor the series sweep to open Big 12 play.

LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech (16-13, 0-3 Big 12) dropped the final game against Baylor (21-5, 3-0 Big 12) 5-2 in extra innings Sunday afternoon at Rocky Johnson Field.

Missy Zoch tallied a season-high 10 strikeouts in the circle for Texas Tech.

It was a pitchers duel to start the game between Zoch and Baylor starter Gia Rodoni as both sides remained scoreless with one hit each through three innings of play.

The Red Raiders struck first in the bottom of the fourth after a double from Heaven Burton put a runner in scoring position for Karli Hamilton who laced an RBI single into center to give Tech the 1-0 lead.

Baylor took a one-run lead in the sixth inning when Emily Hott snuck a two-run home run over the right field wall for the Bears first runs of the game.

Tech battled back in the bottom of the seventh with a leadoff single from Arriana Villa. Jacee Hamlin, running for Villa, advanced to second on a sac bunt from Breanna Russell. With Hamlin in scoring position, Zoe Jones put a ball in play and a low throw from the short stop bounced off the glove of the first baseman allowing Jones to reach and Hamlin to score to tie the game at two. Jones moved to second on the throw to the plate and was replaced by Abbie Orrick pinch running. With two outs, Baylor threw down to second to try to pick off Orrick who then slid safely into third. The throw from short got past Taylor Ellis at third and Orrick attempted to score to win the game, but Ellis picked up the ball and threw a strike home to get Orrick at the plate for the final out to send the game into extras.

After a pair of one-out walks put two runners on for Baylor in the start of extra innings, the Red Raiders made a pitching change, bringing in Erin Edmoundson in relief of Zoch. Edmoundson hit the first batter she faced to load the bases but got the next batter swinging for the second out of the inning. With the Red Raiders a strike away from escaping a bases loaded jam, Lou Gilbert knocked a bases-clearing double to right center to give Baylor the 5-2 lead.

The Red Raiders would go down in order in the bottom of the eighth, giving the Bears the win and the series sweep.

Zoch (7-5) gave up four runs on five hits while walking eight and striking out 10 in 7.1 innings of work.

Burton led the way offensively for Tech, going 3-for-4 from the plate with a pair of singles and a double. Villa collected two hits in the game, going 2-for-3 from the dish including setting up the tying run in the seventh. Hamilton tallied the lone RBI in the game with her single to center.

Rodoni (7-4) went the distance for the Bears, giving up two runs on six hits while striking out six and walking just one batter.
