Washington Picked by Ravens on Final Day of NFL Draft

Ravens used the 170th overall pick to select the Texas Tech defensive lineman Saturday

LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech defensive lineman Broderick Washington Jr. fulfilled his lifetime dream of playing at the next level Saturday as he was selected with the 170th overall pick of the NFL Draft by the Baltimore Ravens.

Texas Tech wrapped the NFL Draft with two NFL Draft selections after Washington was picked in the fifth round and fellow defensive standout Jordyn Brooks was selected 27th overall by the Seattle Seahawks during Thursday night’s first round. Brooks was the first Red Raider defensive player to hear his name called in the first round since the late Gabe Rivera in 1983.

Washington is the first Red Raider defensive lineman to be selected in the NFL Draft since Brandon Williams was taken in the fourth round by the Dallas Cowboys in 2009. That year also marked the last time Texas Tech had at least two defensive players chosen in the same draft as defensive back Darcel McBath was a second-round selection as well.

Washington will join a familiar face in Baltimore in former teammate Antoine Wesley, who enters his second season with the Ravens after the wideout spent the 2019 campaign on the practice squad. Washington is the first Red Raider to be selected by the Ravens since 2005 when Mike Smith, now the outside linebackers coach for the Green Bay Packers, was taken in the seventh round.

Washington, a native of Longview, Texas, was a staple on the defensive line the past four seasons as he started in 37 games over his career, while totaling 138 tackles, including 15.5 for a loss and 8.5 sacks. A two-year captain, Washington posted at least 35 tackles in each of the past three years as a regular starter, notching a career-high 44 as a sophomore in 2017 followed by 41 in 2018 and 39 this past season.

In addition to the selection of both Brooks and Washington, offensive linemen Terence Steele and Travis Bruffy have both already signed free agent agreements with the Dallas Cowboys and the Green Bay Packers, respectively. Additional free agent or camp invites will be updated at TexasTech.com or via @TexasTechFB on Twitter as they are confirmed.
