Big 12 announces men’s basketball schedule
LUBBOCK – The Big 12 men’s basketball schedule has dropped, and for Texas Tech, the last day of 2024 will be the first day of conference play. The Red Raiders will begin their 2025 Big 12 men’s basketball schedule by hosting UCF on New Year’s Eve at United Supermarkets Arena before going on the road, playing at Utah on January 4, 2025, and at BYU on January 7. A 20-game conference schedule will culminate for the Red Raiders by playing at Arizona State in the regular-season finale on March 8 in Tempe, Arizona. Tech went 11-7 in Big 12 play last season, finishing tied for third with Baylor.
Opponents were selected based on a combination of geography, historical results and a poll of the coaches to best balance the schedule in terms of travel and competitiveness. The Phillips 66 Big 12 Men’s Basketball Championship will be conducted Tuesday-Saturday, March 11-15 at T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, Missouri.
Finalized details on times and television designations will be announced at a later date.
With the four new additions and a couple subtractions, each of the 16 men’s basketball programs in the Big 12 will now play five conference opponents twice and the other 10 conference opponents once (home or away) for a total of 20 conference games – up from 18 which has been the standard since the 2011-12 season. The Red Raiders are slated to play home-and-away matchups next season against Arizona, Arizona State, Houston, Oklahoma State and TCU. The home-only opponents for Tech have Baylor, Colorado, Iowa State, UCF and West Virginia coming to Lubbock, while the Red Raiders will travel to play at BYU, Cincinnati, Kansas, Kansas State and Utah.
Single game tickets for all Texas Tech home games will go on-sale first to Red Raider Club members and Red Raider Basketball season ticket holders via a special pre-sale beginning on Monday, October 7th and running until Friday, October 11th. Assigned pre-sale dates are determined by Red Raider Club Member level and will be emailed to Red Raider Club Members and season ticket holders the week of September 30th. Single game tickets for all home Red Raider Basketball games will then be made available to the public on Monday, October 14th. Single game deposits are still available online or over the phone through the Texas Tech Ticket Office.

UCF Knights (Tuesday, Dec. 31 – Lubbock)
The Red Raiders and Knights will ring in the new year and begin Big 12 play at the USA on December 31 following splitting their two games last season. It will be the only meeting in the regular season this year between the programs. Tech won in Lubbock last season before falling in Orlando in the second game. The 2024 matchups were the first time the programs have met in program history, bringing the two teams together this season with a 1-1 all-time record. UCF, which is in its second season in the Big 12, went 17-16 overall and 7-11 in Big 12 play last year ending with a loss to South Florida in the NIT. The Knights are led by head coach Johnny Dawkins who is entering his ninth season at UCF and has a 304-218 career record over 16 overall seasons. Tech traveled to Austin and earned a 78-67 win over No. 20 Texas in its Big 12 opener last season and is currently 12-16 in Big 12 openers.
Utah Utes (Saturday, Jan. 4 – Salt Lake City)
Tech and Utah will meet for the first time as conference opponents on January 4 at the Jon M. Huntsman Center in Salt Lake City in the only regular-season matchup. The Utes are coming off a season where they went 22-15 overall and 9-11 in Pac-12 play. The team advanced to the NIT semifinals where it fell to Indiana State to end its season. Utah leads the all-time series over the Red Raiders with a 4-3 record with the last matchup coming on November 19, 2015, in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The Utes are led by Craig Smith who is entering his fourth season with the program. He has a 50-50 record with the program and has a 275-158 record in his career.
BYU Cougars (Tuesday, Jan. 7 – Provo)
Tech will make its third trip to Provo, Utah in program history on January 7 for the third conference game of the season at the Marriott Center. The Red Raiders swept the Cougars last season, earning an 85-78 win in Lubbock before taking an 81-67 win in the Big 12 Championship quarterfinals. The all-time series is now tied 3-3 with Tech returning to Provo for the first time since the 1993 season. BYU is in its second season in the Big 12 and is coming off a 23-11 overall record and a 10-8 conference record. Kevin Young is entering his first season at BYU after being the associate head coach of the Phoenix Suns.
Iowa State Cyclones (Saturday, Jan. 11 – Lubbock)
Tech will host Iowa State on January 11 in the only regular-season matchup between the programs. The Cyclones earned a 69-64 win over the Red Raiders in Ames last season in the only meeting and now holds a 23-22 advantage in the all-time series. Iowa State finished last season with a 29-8 overall record and went 13-5 in Big 12 play. The Cyclones won the 2024 Big 12 Championship by knocking off Houston in the tournament finals and advanced to the Sweet 16 with wins over South Dakota State and Washington State in the NCAA Tournament. The team’s season came to an end with a three-point loss to Illinois. The Red Raiders are 14-6 all-time at home against the Cyclones with four straight home victories in the series. The Cyclones are led by head coach T.J. Otzelberger who is 70-35 through three seasons in Ames and has a 169-98 career record.
Kansas State Wildcats (Tuesday, Jan. 14 – Manhattan)
The Red Raiders will return to Manhattan to play the Wildcats in the only regular season meeting between the programs on January 14 at the Bramlage Coliseum. Tech secured a 60-59 win over K-State last season in Lubbock in the only game the two teams played against each other. The Wildcats are 26-25 in the all-time series, including owning an 18-6 record in Manhattan. Tech has lost the past two meetings in Manhattan but has won seven of the last 10 in the series. K-State is coming off a season where it went 19-15 overall, 8-10 in Big 12 play and lost to Iowa in the first round of the NIT. The Wildcats are led by Jerome Tang who is 45-25 through two seasons.
Arizona Wildcats (Saturday, Jan. 18 – Lubbock; Saturday, Feb. 8 – Tucson)
Tech and Arizona are set to meet twice this season – first on January 18 in Lubbock and then again on February 8 in Tucson. The Wildcats are in their first Big 12 season and are coming off a year where they went 27-9 overall and 15-5 in conference. Tech leads the all-time series by a 28-24 margin with the programs last meeting on December 3, 2013, in Tucson. The Wildcats were ranked No. 2 and won that game 79-58. Tech is 16-5 all-time at home over Arizona and 12-17 on the road in a series that began in 1934 with the Red Raiders securing a pair of victories on back-to-back days in Tucson. Tommy Lloyd is 88-20 as the team’s head coach going into his fourth season.
Cincinnati Bearcats (Tuesday, Jan. 21 – Cincinnati)
Tech will play at Cincinnati for the first time ever on January 21 at the Fifth Third Arena in the only scheduled matchup between the two teams. The Bearcats traveled to Lubbock last season and earned a 75-72 win over No. 15 Tech and are currently 2-0 in the all-time series. Cincinnati is coming off a season where it went 22-15 overall and 7-11 in its first year in the Big 12. Last year ended in the third round of the NIT for the Bearcats who open their season this year with a home game against Arkansas-Pine Bluff on November 4. Cincinnati is led by Wes Miller who is 63-43 through three seasons leading the program and 248-178 in his career.
Oklahoma State Cowboys (Sunday, Jan. 26 – Lubbock; Saturday, Feb. 15 – Stillwater)
Tech and OSU are set to meet twice this season – first on January 26 in Lubbock before playing again on February 15 in Stillwater. The Red Raiders swept the season series last year, winning by 17 points in both matchups. OSU still maintains a 50-26 all-time record in the series that dates back to 1937. The Cowboys are coming off a season where they went 12-20 overall, 4-14 in conference play and missed the postseason. OSU is scheduled to begin its first year under head coach Steve Lutz on November 4 against Green Bay in Gallagher-Iba Arena. Steve Lutz is entering his first season as the program’s head coach after compiling a 69-35 career record with two seasons at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and one at Western Kentucky.
TCU Horned Frogs (Wednesday, Jan. 29 – Lubbock; Tuesday, Feb. 18 – Fort Worth)
Tech and TCU are set to meet twice this season – first on January 29 in Lubbock before playing again on February 18 in the Schollmaier Arena. The programs split last season’s matchups with the Horned Frogs earning an 85-78 win in Fort Worth in the first game and the Red Raiders taking an 82-81 win in Lubbock. Tech holds an 87-56 record in the all-time series that began in 1932 with TCU taking a 30-19 win in Fort Worth. The Horned Frogs are coming off a season where they went 21-13 overall and 9-9 in Big 12 play. TCU advanced to the NCAA Tournament where it lost to Utah State in the first round. Tech will be looking to snap a four-game losing streak at TCU in the road matchup. Jaimie Dixon is 160-123 through eight seasons leading the TCU program and has a 488-233 career record after also coaching for 13 seasons at Pitt.
Houston Cougars (Saturday, Feb. 1 – Houston; Monday, Feb. 24 – Lubbock)
Tech and Houston are set to meet twice this season – first on February 1 in the Fertitta Center and then again on February 24 in Lubbock. The Red Raiders will be looking to snap a five-game losing streak to the Cougars after dropping both matchups last season with a regular-season loss in Houston before a loss in the semifinals of the Big 12 Championship in Kansas City. Houston leads the all-time series by a 31-27 margin in the all-time series that began in 1961. The Cougars are entering their second season in the Big 12 and are coming off a 32-5 overall record and a 15-3 record in conference play last season. UH advanced to the Sweet 16 where it lost by three to Duke in a matchup in Dallas to end its season. Houston’s trip to Lubbock will be the first time the Cougars have played here since 2003. Kelvin Sampson is entering his 11th season at Houston where he has a 264-79 record leading the Cougars. Sampson is 764-349 in his career.
Baylor Bears (Tuesday, Feb. 4 – Lubbock)
The only scheduled matchup between Tech and Baylor will take place on February 4 in Lubbock – the 11th conference game on the Red Raider schedule. The Red Raiders and Bears split last season’s series with the home team winning each game. Tech earned a 78-68 win in Lubbock in the regular-season finale and now holds an 83-65 advantage in the all-time series which began in 1937. The Red Raiders are 48-22 at home against Baylor all-time. Last season, the Bears went 24-11 overall and tied with the Red Raiders with an 11-7 conference record. This will be the first season since 1957 where Texas Tech does not travel to play in Waco. Scott Drew returns for his 22nd season in Waco where he has a 444-244 record leading the program.
Arizona State Sun Devils (Wednesday, Feb. 12 – Lubbock; Saturday, March 8 – Tempe)
Tech and Arizona State are set to meet twice this season – first on February 12 in Lubbock and then to close out the regular season March 8 in Tempe at Desert Financial Arena. The Red Raiders own a 22-19 advantage in the all-time series that is being renewed for the first time since the 2013 season when Tech took a 76-62 loss in Tempe. Tech has lost six straight in the series. The Sun Devils are coming off a season where they went 14-18 overall and were 8-12 in Pac-12 play. The Red Raiders earned a 30-22 win over the Sun Devils in the first matchup between the programs on January 9, 1934, in Tempe. Bobby Hurley is entering his 10th season as the ASU head coach where he has a 197-151 record.
West Virginia Mountaineers (Saturday, Feb. 22 – Lubbock)
The 16th conference game on the schedule sets up the only matchup against West Virginia on February 22 at United Supermarkets Arena. The Red Raiders earned an 81-70 win in Morgantown last season in the only matchup between the two programs. WVU owns an 18-10 record in the all-time series, including going 6-5 in Lubbock since making its first trip in 2013. The Mountaineers are now under the guidance of head coach Darian DeVries who was at Drake before moving over to Morgantown. His first game at WVU will be against Robert Morris on November 4 at the WVU Coliseum with the Mountaineers looking to bounce back from going 9-23 overall and 4-14 in Big 12 play last season.
Kansas Jayhawks (Saturday, March 1 – Lawrence)
Tech will play in Allen Fieldhouse against the Jayhawks in the only scheduled matchup between the two teams this season on March 1. The Red Raiders earned a 29-point win over KU in Lubbock last season in the only meeting. The Jayhawks are 43-8 all-time in the series, including owning a 22-1 advantage in Allen Fieldhouse over the Red Raiders. Tech’s lone win in Lawrence came with an 85-73 decision on January 2, 2018. The Jayhawks are coming off a season where they went 23-11 overall, 15-1 at home and 10-8 in Big 12 play. The team advanced to the NCAA Tournament second round before losing to Gonzaga to see its season end. Bill Self has amassed a 795-248 career record and is 588-143 as the head coach at KU over the past 21 seasons.
Colorado Buffaloes (Wednesday, March 5 – Lubbock)
Conference opponents once again, Tech and Colorado are scheduled to play on March 5 in the only matchup between the teams this season. The Red Raiders and Buffaloes last played in 2011 with Colorado taking a 71-68 win in Lubbock. The Buffaloes are 18-13 all-time in a series where it is tied 7-7 in Lubbock. Colorado is coming off a season where it went 26-11 overall and 13-7 in Pac-12 play. The program reached the 2024 Sweet 16 with NCAA Tournament wins over Boise State and Florida before falling by four points against Marquette. Colorado is set to open its season against Eastern Washington on November 4 in Boulder and will play in the Maui Invitational. Tad Boyle is entering his 15th season as the Colorado head coach where he is 298-183 following his winning season.
