Comegys, Snyders earn top-20 finishes at Big 12 Championship

TRINITY, Texas — Matthew Comegys and Tyran Snyders both finished inside the top 20 at the Big 12 Championship, which wrapped up on Wednesday with a fourth and final round at Whispering Pines Golf Club. As a team, the Red Raiders fired a collective 6-under-par 282 in round four — their lowest round of the week — and ended the tournament tied for sixth place among the 14 teams in action at 7-over-par.

The Red Raiders’ 6-under 282 was the second-lowest round carded by any team on Wednesday, bested only by Texas, who carded a 12-under 276. Furthermore, the Red Raiders’ 6-under 282 was the fifth-lowest round carded throughout the entire tournament among the 56 rounds recorded over four rounds each by 14 teams. Tech’s Wednesday round vaulted the team into a tie for sixth after ending Tuesday in a tie for ninth.

Comegys was lights out on Wednesday, as the sophomore posted a bogey-free 4-under-par 68 across his final 18 holes to finish 14th on the individual leaderboard at 1-under-par 287. Comegys birdied holes 5, 7, 12 and 18 while posting pars on the remainder. It was Comegys’ second straight top-20 finish and his seventh this season, and a stark improvement from his 42nd-place finish in last year’s Big 12 Championship appearance as a freshman.

Snyders finished three shots back of Comegys in a tie for 18th after ending a consistent week at Whispering Pines with a final card of 2-over-par 290, as the senior has now placed within the top 20 in four of eight events this spring. He and Comegys share the team lead with seven finishes this season in the top 20.

Calum Scott and Vicente Marzilio rounded off what was a team effort on Wednesday, as all four of Tech’s counting scores finished even-par or better. The duo each posted a 1-under-par 71 in round four, with Scott ending a respectable week in a tie for 34th. Additionally, junior Charlie DeLong finished one shot behind Scott in a tie for 39th after carding a 6-over-par 78 across the final round.

No. 17 Texas ultimately claimed the team title at 25-under-par, 18 strokes better than the runner-up, No. 14 Oklahoma (-7).

No. 12 Texas Tech now awaits the NCAA Men’s Golf Selection Show in anticipation of being selected for one of six regional sites (Austin, TX; Baton Rouge, LA; Chapel Hill, NC; Rancho Santa Fe, CA; Stanford, CA; West Lafayette, IN) contested, May 13-15. The selection show will be broadcast live on the Golf Channel on Wednesday, May 1 at 1 p.m. CT.
