Covenant Health Annual Report to Our Communities

In 2023, Covenant Health invested more than $100 million in improving the health of our communities by supporting organizations, programs and initiatives that create lasting change at the neighborhood level.

Covenant Health prioritizes serving the communities of the Texas-New Mexico Region. We strive to elevate the delivery of health care, improving the health and wellness in our communities through strategic outreach to our most vulnerable populations.

The Annual Report to Our Communities allows us to show exactly how we were able to
financially support the mission throughout our communities.

  • $5.3 million was given to community health improvement and strategic partnerships
  • $11 million was given to health professions education and research
  • $37 million was given to free and discounted care for the uninsured and underinsured
  • $46.3 million was given to unpaid cost of Medicaid and other means-tested government
    programs

“We are grateful for the opportunity to care for you and our communities and equally proud of the work we’re doing with partners to achieve health for a better world,” Covenant Health Regional Chief Executive Walter Cathey said. “We are proud to serve West Texas and eastern New Mexico for the past 104 years and look forward to providing the highest quality of care for this region for the next 100 years.”

The Covenant Community Outreach Counseling Center is dedicated to meeting the mental health needs of our community. The center implemented an internship program in 2022, which has expanded from two to seven mental health interns.

The internship program is a collaboration between Covenant Health, Texas Tech University, Lubbock Christian University, and Abilene Christian University. This allows Covenant to expand access to counselors while providing the interns with exposure to a career within our organization. The collaboration benefits the interns and helps build a stronger mental health workforce. It directly addresses our region’s need for enhanced access to mental health resources to improve the well-being of our community.

The Covenant Ready program, at all Covenant hospitals in Texas, is dedicated to educating students in the South Plains about various careers available in health care. This initiative targets middle, high school and college students.

The program is designed for students in grades 6-8. During the summer camp, students participate in immersive experiences such as hospital tours, observing x-rays, witnessing lung demonstrations and exploring emergency vehicles.

The Covenant Ready Live OR Program provides students with a unique opportunity to witness real-time surgeries performed by our physicians and engage with Covenant caregivers.

Through firsthand observation and interactive learning, students gain a deeper understanding of the skills, expertise, and teamwork involved in health care professions.
