Komac, Sayfetdinova move on to Sweet 16

STILLWATER, Okla. – It was a fight throughout, but the No. 5-ranked Lady Raider duo of Metka Komac and Avelina Sayfetdinova outlasted the No. 30 North Carolina pairing of Abbey Forbes and Reilly Tran, 4-6, 7-5, 1-0 (2), on Tuesday evening at the Greenwood Tennis Center. They become just the second Lady Raider pair to make it to the Sweet 16 and for the first time since 2013.

The Lady Raiders had to battle back after dropping the first set to the Tar Heels, 4-6. In the set, both teams began with a break to tie it at 1-1. They would trade games until 4-4 when the Tar Heels held and broke serve to take set one.

Komac and Sayfetdinova began set two on fire – taking a 2-0 lead after breaking serve and holding their own. However, Forbes and Tran retook the momentum when they won four-consecutive games to hold the 4-2 advantage. The Lady Raiders showed poise, winning five of the next six games to claim the second set by a 7-5 score.

Forcing a third-set super tiebreaker, Tech had to reach 10 points first in order to advance to the Sweet 16 – and they did just that. North Carolina started the breaker on serve, holding for the 1-0 lead. The lead was short-lived, though, as Komac and Sayfetdinova won seven-straight points for the 7-1 lead. They would only give up one more point to claim the match with the 1-0 (2) third-set score.

Up next, Komac and Sayfetdinova take on FIU’sNo. 56-ranked team of Katerina Mandelikova and Oyinlomo Quadre, who defeated Ohio State’s No. 25 team of Irina Cantos Siemers and Luciana Perry, 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (8), Wednesday, May 22 at a time TBD.
