Lady Raiders add Mariia Hlahola to 2024-25 roster

LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech Women’s Tennis is adding Belmont transfer, Mariia Hlahola, to the 2024-25 roster as announced by head coach Adam Herendeen on Saturday morning. Hlahola is an incoming junior who spent her first two seasons with Belmont, where she set multiple records and was the No. 1 player for the Bruins.

“We are certain that Mariia is going to come in and make a big impact on our team immediately! She has a very high ceiling, and we are excited to help her continue to develop her game. More importantly, she shares the same values as our program, and we are thrilled she chose to be a Red Raider!” Herendeen said.

In 2023-24, Hlahola led the team to a 13-win season, a 5-3 conference record and third-place finish in the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC). Helping the Bruins to back-to-back MVC Tournament semifinal appearances, Hlahola boasted a 21-7 overall record in singles, a 16-6 record at court one and 7-1 record in MVC play. In doubles, she went 21-12 overall, with a 13-8 dual record, all at court one, as well as adding four doubles wins in conference.

In her sophomore stint, the Kyiv, Ukraine native was named the MVC Co-Player of the Year, was an MVC All-Conference First Team at No. 1 Singles honoree and claimed the No. 1 singles title and No. 1 doubles title in the MVC individual championships last fall. Earning two MVC Singles Player of the Week and four MVC Doubles Players of the Week honors in 2023-24, Hlahola made a doubles quarterfinal appearance at the ITA Ohio Valley Regional Tournament with teammate Anastasiya Zholdakova as the pair defeated teams from Louisville, Miami (OH) and Purdue.

In her freshman year (2022-23), Hlahola aided Belmont to a 6-2 MVC record and another third-place finish in conference. She was named the MVC Co-Freshman of the Year, All-Conference in singles, the MVC individual champion at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles and made the 2023 MVC Women’s Tennis All-Select Team. Over her freshman season, Hlahola boasted an overall singles record of 23-9, a dual record of 15-6, all at the top of the lineup, and a 5-2 record in MVC play. In doubles, she went 17-10 overall, 13-7 in dual matches at court one and 6-1 in conference.

Hlahola was a two-time MVC Singles Player of the Week and MVC Doubles Players of the Week selection, highlighted by an impressive ranked doubles win over Auburn’s No. 8 pair of Ariana Arseneault and Carolyn Ansari, 6-4, to clinch the doubles point for the Bruins on Feb. 19, 2023. During the fall, Hlahola advanced out of qualifying in singles at the ITA Ohio Valley Regional Tournament, then made it to the singles Round of 16 after defeating players from Purdue and Memphis. In addition, she and Zholdakova advanced out of the doubles qualifying draw and was able to get a victory against a 1-seeded Xavier pair.

Hlahola had a record-setting career in just two seasons with the Bruins. Currently, she holds the Belmont record for most singles wins in a season and most singles wins by a freshman (23), for most singles wins in conference (7) and for most doubles wins in a season (21) – six more than the next best duo.
