Lady Raiders’ historic season comes to an end in doubles quarterfinals

STILLWATER, Okla. – It was a fight to the finish, but the No. 5 team of Metka Komac and Avelina Sayfetdinova fell to the No. 14 team of Aysegul Mert and Dasha Vidmanova of Georgia, 6-3, 4-6, 0-1 (9), on Thursday afternoon at the Greenwood Tennis Center. Their historic run ends in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Doubles Championships, the furthest any team in program history has gone.

In the first set, the Lady Raiders went down 0-1, but that was the only lead Georgia would have. Tech held serve after being down 30-40 in the second game to tie it, 1-1, then won the next four games for the 5-1 advantage. Georgia tried to make a comeback, winning two games in a row, but Komac and Sayfetdinova got the break to win the first set, 6-3.

Both doubles teams traded games to tie it up 2-2 in the second set, then a hold put Tech up 3-2. Georgia would win two-straight games, followed by another game from the Lady Raiders to even it at 4-all. But the Bulldogs would take the next two games for a 6-4 second-set win.

In the super tiebreaker set, Georgia started out with the 1-0 lead on a break. Tech broke right back to tie it up at 1-all. Both teams went back-and-forth, until Tech jumped out to a 5-3 lead. The Bulldogs would win the next four points for the 7-5 advantage until the Lady Raiders once again fought back to tie it at 8-all. The teams traded points until the Bulldogs would win it, 11-9.

Komac and Sayfetdinova end their historic season as All-Americans, All-Big 12 First Team Selections and the Big 12 Position Championships at Court One Doubles. They finish with an impressive, 30-6 over doubles record with six ranked doubles victories. Together in the past two seasons, they collected a 50-14 overall doubles record (.781).
