Red Raiders complete NCAA West competition

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Texas Tech women competed their final day of NCAA West First Round prelims Saturday night at John McDonnell Field.

 

Tech secured all of its 14 entries Friday night for the national championships.

 

The high jump freshmen duo of Temitope Adeshina and Claire Lowrey were the first to punch their tickets for Eugene to start the day. Each of theme cleared 1.84m (6-0 ½) as Adeshina placed seventh, while Lowrey placed tied for ninth.

 

In the discus, Zoe Burleson booked her first trip in her third NCAA West meet. Burleson, on her first throw, landed the discus at 57.26m (187-10) to finish ninth. In 2023, she missed the cut by one spot and in 2022 she finished 23rd.

 

Juliet Cherubet set a new facility record that stood since 2008 as she ran a 4:09.04 in the first heat of the 1500m. Her time is a new PB and goes down as the No. 2 time in Tech history. Cherubet also qualified for nationals in the 5k later in the evening securing one of the top-5 finishers (fourth) in her heat with a time of. 16:01.65 -10th in Tech history.

 

Rosemary Chukwuma shined in the 100m dropping a wind-legal 10.88 (1.2w) to secure her spot. She smashed her 2022 school record of 10.99 and lowered her Nigerian record of 11.12, while easily also hitting the Olympic standard (11.07). Her time of the eighth-fastest in NCAA history and makes her the sixth-fastest sprinter.

 

Anne-Suzanna Fosther-Katta led the way for a trio of triple jumpers leaping a PB 13.83m (45-4 ½) (1.2w) – No. 6 all-time for Tech. Ruta Lasmane finished in sixth with a leap of 13.78m (45-2 ½) (1.1w).

 

Notables

Alyssa Colbert (11.03, 2.1w) and Success Umukoro (11.09, 2.3w) punched their tickets in the 100m.
Grace Oshiokpu claimed the final spot in the triple jump earning her bid to nationals bounding a PB 13.40m (43-11 ¾).

Tech will have the week off before leaving for Eugene next Sunday, June 2. The 2024 NCAA Outdoor Championships run from June 5-8.
