Additional Notes:
The Texas Tech men’s golf team is set to appear in the NCAA Championships for the fourth straight year; it will be Tech’s fifth appearance out of the last six finals.
It will be the Red Raiders’ 16th overall appearance at the NCAA Championships and 12th under head coach Greg Sands, who is in his 22nd season at the helm of the program.
The Red Raiders NCAA Championship appearances occurred the following years: ’56, ’59, ’60, ’76, ’02, ’06, ’07, ’09, ’10, ’13, ’15, ’18, ’21, ’22, ’23, ’24.
Tech’s best finish as a program at the NCAA Championships is fifth, having done so three different times (2010, 2018, 2022). The Red Raiders fell in the quarterfinal round of match play on each of those occasions – per the NCAA, teams losing in the match play quarterfinals are credited with fifth-place finishes.
The addition of match play to determine the NCAA team champion began in 2009. The Red Raiders are 0-3 all-time in NCAA match play competitions.
The Red Raiders were selected to participate in the 2024 postseason on May 1 and were placed in the Baton Rouge Regional as the 3-seed in a field of teams seeded one through 14. The selection marked the 22nd-straight regional appearance for the Red Raiders and 25th overall for the men’s golf program.
Needing to be one of the top five teams to advance, Tech earned a bid to compete for a National title by finishing third behind stellar performances by Baard Skogen and Calum Scott, who finished first and second, respectively. The Baton Rouge Regional also qualified Auburn (-21), Virginia (-13), the third-place Red Raiders (-8), as well as Ohio State (E), and regional host LSU (+4) grabbed the fifth and final spot.
Skogan fired a final round 6-under 66 to earn medalist honors that aided a 54-hole finish of 8-under 208. Scott carded a final round 5-under 67, leading him to a 6-under 210 after three rounds.
The Red Raiders entered the postseason having a dominant spring that included a three-event, one-month stretch where they earned two wins and one runner-up finish.
Tech entered the spring season ranked No. 21 and rose as high as No. 5 in the national rankings on March 6. The Red Raiders entered the regional round at No. 14 via the May 9 Scoreboard powered by Clippd rankings. The Red Raiders enter the NCAA Championships ranked No. 11.
The foursome of Tyran Snyders (51), Calum Scott (53), Matthew Comegys (68) and Baard Skogen (93) each rank inside the nation’s top 100 of individual players entering the National Championships. All four also enter this week owning a sub-72 scoring average in the 2023-24 season.
