Red Raiders walk it off against Kansas

LUBBOCK, Texas – Heading into the seventh inning down two runs, the Red Raiders (25-12, 5-8) used four hits and walk to score three runs and complete the 6-5 walk-off win against (RV) Kansas (25-13-1, 10-6) at Rocky Johnson Field.

Maddy Wright used her third straight start of 120+ pitches to pick up her ninth win of the season. After the Jayhawks put up five runs in the third inning, Wright locked in and allowed no hits the rest of the way as she recorded three straight three-up-three-down innings in the fifth, sixth and seventh.

Wright also helped on offense, sending a ball 279 feet in the fourth inning to cut the Jayhawks lead down to 5-3.

Riley Love and Kailey Wyckoff also added to Tech’s homer total. Love sent a ball 272 feet in the first inning to give Tech the early 2-0 lead while Wyckoff’s homer came in the seventh inning to spark the Red Raiders rally.

Arriana Villa had two doubles including one following Wyckoff’s homer in the seventh. Raegan Jennings joined Villa, Wyckoff and Love with two hits including a clutch single in the seventh inning to load the bases and keep the line moving.

Wyckoff’s fifth homer of the season came with one out in the bottom of the seventh on a 1-1 count. Villa followed and drove a double into left-center field before Love was intentionally walked. Jennings delivered with a single into left field which led to loaded bases for Abbie Orrick.

Orrick hit a deep fly ball to center field that allowed Jacee Hamlin – who was pinching running for Villa – to score and tie the game 5-5. Demi Elder stepped into the batter’s box next with two outs.

The junior took the first pitch she saw up the middle and saw it bounce off the diving glove of the Kansas second baseman. The deflection gave Love the perfect opportunity to round the corner at third and cross home plate for the win.

UP NEXT: The Red Raiders will be back Saturday to take on Kansas at 4 p.m.
