TCU Holds Off Red Raiders 35-34
Texas Tech had more first downs, rushing yards, offensive plays, rushing touchdowns and interceptions, but the only stat that mattered was the final scoreboard. Will Hammond was 10-15 with a touchdown but his fumble in the 4th quarter was the final blow to the comeback. Red Raiders started down 11, 14-3 with 1:31 left in the 1st quarter. They fired off 28 unanswered points with 14 to end the 1st half and 14 to start the second half. Hammond came into the game to start the third quarter in relief of Behren Morton who left the game with an injury to his non throwing shoulder.
Tahj Brooks continued his attack on the Texas Tech career running record with 30 rushes for 121 yards and a touchdown. J’Koby Williams added 42 yards on 8 carries as he was given the opportunity to give Tahj a break in the backfield. Caleb Douglas was targeted 13 times and he made 9 catches for 140 yards with 46 yards after catch. He led the Red Raiders with catches and yards. Coy Eakin had 56 yards and a touchdown on 4 catches. TCU outscored the Red Raiders 21-3 over the last 18:07 of the game to secure the victory.
Chapman Lewis and Ben Roberts had 7 tackles apiece. Lewis and C.J. Baskerville added interceptions for the defense.
5 Punts, 2 fumbles and a missed FG were countered by 4 touchdowns and two field goals for the Red Raiders for their 34 points.
The loss drops the Red Raiders to 5-3 this year and 3-2 in the Big 12. Red Raiders head to Ames to face the #11 Iowa State Cyclones at 2:30P Saturday on ESPN. The Red Raiders are 13-8 versus the Cyclones and are on a 2 game winning streak after defeating them 14-10 in Ames in 2022. The Cyclones are trying to return their dominance over Texas Tech as before the current win streak had won 5 in a row with an average winning margin of 21.8 points.
