Texas Tech Records Highest Term, Cumulative GPAs on Record
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech student-athletes raised the bar academically once again this fall, recording both the highest cumulative and term GPAs on record.
Texas Tech Athletics announced its fall semester academic performances Tuesday, which featured a 3.39 department term GPA and a 3.40 cumulative GPA among its more than 400 student-athletes. Texas Tech’s department term GPA was the highest on record for either the fall or spring semester, breaking the previous mark of 3.36 that was set during the 2023 fall term.
“In this day and age, it can be easy to forget about the key word of educate from our mission statement – ‘To educate, serve and grow Fearless Champions,” Director of Athletics Kirby Hocutt said. “Our student-athletes simply will not let that be the narrative here at Texas Tech. This accomplishment has become a trend we do not take lightly as we continue to reset the academic standard each and every semester. We can’t thank our student-athletes enough for their tireless effort and congratulate them again on another successful semester.”
This marked the 20th-consecutive semester Texas Tech’s student-athletes have boasted at least a 3.0 department term GPA as all 13 of its athletic teams finished above that mark. The women’s golf program led the way with a 3.76 term GPA followed by soccer (3.64), volleyball (3.58), women’s tennis (3.54), men’s tennis (3.49) and softball (3.45).
For softball, it marked the highest fall term GPA on record as the Red Raiders pushed their cumulative GPA up to 3.46, also a new team high. Texas Tech’s baseball program recorded its highest fall term GPA on record as well with a 3.22 this fall. Two other sports also set their highest cumulative GPAs in women’s track and field (3.45) and women’s golf (3.72).
In total, Texas Tech had 95 student-athletes – 22 percent of the population – record a perfect 4.0 GPA, its most on record for any term. Texas Tech also had 74 percent of its student-athletes – 317 in total – finish with at least a 3.0 term GPA, which again was its most on record. The list of accomplishments also featured 62 student-athletes on the President’s List and 103 student-athletes recognized on the Dean’s List.
“Routinely resetting the academic standard is our expectation for our student-athletes,” said Aaron Tebo, Associate Athletics Director and executive director for academic excellence. “This continues to be their mindset and these numbers are evidence of that. But that would not be obtainable without the outstanding support from our Texas Tech faculty, coaches and administration and incredible work being done by our Marsha Sharp Center team, including our learning specialists, tutor coordinators, and academic advisors daily. It is truly remarkable seeing our student-athletes embrace our expectations and then allow us the opportunity to pour into them, leading them to unprecedented academic success and helping prepare them as Fearless Champions.”
Texas Tech student-athletes have a dedicated staff at the Marsha Sharp Center who guide each student-athlete to success from the time of enrollment to graduation. The Marsha Sharp Center provides space for private study, computer labs, supplemental instruction classrooms and private conferencing areas for tutoring and mentoring appointments.
Note: For reporting purposes, the sport of track and field was combined into two teams based on gender, using rosters from indoor, outdoor and cross country seasons.
