Martin signs with Lady Raiders

LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech Lady Raiders have signed 6-2 guard Kalysta ‘Bird’ Martin as announced by head coach Krista Gerlich on Wednesday afternoon.

“She’s a game changer,” Gerlich said. “Bird’s potential is off the charts. She’s a 6-2 guard who can play the 1 through the 4. She’s an elite three-point shooter, which is obviously what caught my attention on her.”

The San Antonio native is a four-year letterwinner for Providence Catholic School where she helped the team to two second-round playoff appearances (2020-21; 2022-23). Martin is a four-time TAPPS All-State and All-District selection, while earning ADIDAS All-American honors the past two seasons.

She is a four-star recruit and ranked No. 63 in the nation and No. 7 in the state of Texas for the class of 2024. Martin has collected Offensive Player of the Year and MVP accolades for three consecutive years.

In Martin’s freshman stint, she averaged 15.9 points per game (ppg), 10.1 rebounds per game (rpg), 5.4 assists per game (apg) and 1.8 blocks per game (bpg). The following season, she almost doubled her production after totaling 27.1 ppg, 17.4 rpg, 4.4 apg and 5.4 bpg. Last year, she averaged 24.7 ppg, 14.6 rpg, 3.8 apg and 4.2 bpg.

In her career, she has played in 72 games and tallied 1,646 points, 1,024 rebounds, 317 assists, 203 steals and 254 blocks, while posting a career-best 47 points in a game.

“She’s a great passer and can get to the rim and finish through contact,” Gerlich added. “Kalysta’s ceiling is so high – It’s going to be so much fun coaching her and watching her improvement over the years. Her length and athleticism are going to be disruptive on defense, too.”
