Texas Tech Spring Game set for April 20 in Midland

LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech announced Friday its annual Spring Game will move to Astound Broadband Stadium in Midland on April 20 due to the ongoing construction at Jones AT&T Stadium.

The Spring Game rounds out 15 allocated practices for head coach Joey McGuire and his program as the Red Raiders will return to the Permian Basin for the first time since 2019. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. with television and fan information to be announced at a later date.

“This has been a goal of ours since I accepted the job here at Texas Tech,” McGuire said of the Red Raiders’ return to Midland. “The Permian Basin is such a vital area for us, not only from a recruiting perspective but also due to the large alumni base that is so dedicated to this university. We look forward to bringing our team back to Midland for what I’m sure will be a memorable experience.”

Texas Tech regularly attracted several thousand Red Raider fans in its previous trips to Midland where the Red Raiders hosted either a spring scrimmage or its actual Spring Game over a seven-year stretch from 2013-19. The area represents one of Texas Tech’s largest alumni bases and one of the state’s top recruiting bases for prospective football student-athletes.

Texas Tech will host its remaining 14 practices either inside Jones AT&T Stadium or the practice fields adjacent to the Sports Performance Center. Due to the ongoing construction project, all practices will be closed to the general public outside members of the Texas High School Coaches Association (THSCA). The Red Raiders are slated to kick off their spring schedule March 19 with a typical format of three practices per week.

Since the end of the 2023 season, Texas Tech has already started two additional projects at Jones AT&T Stadium with the demolition of the Football Training Facility and the creation of a new visiting locker room facility. Texas Tech will also begin this spring installing a new video board and sound system on the north end of the stadium.

Each of those projects are part of the $240 million south end zone and Womble Football Center project that is scheduled to be completed this summer ahead of the Aug. 31 season opener between the Red Raiders and Abilene Christian.
