Chance McMillian named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week

LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech senior Chance McMillian has earned Big 12 Newcomer of the Week honors after going off for 24 points with eight 3-pointers last week at Butler.

“I felt like I was in a zone,” McMillian said. “If anyone on the team hits a couple 3s, we should go back to them. My teammates were finding me during the game. Being unselfish is the most important thing. I feel more comfortable on the court playing unselfishly. I never try to hunt shots, instead, let the game come to me.”

McMillian matched a career-high with 24 points after going 8-for-10 on 3-pointers in an overtime loss last Thursday in Indianapolis. He was 4-for-4 on 3-pointers in the second half to help Tech force overtime and finished the game as the leading rebounder with seven. In his first season at Tech after playing three at Grand Canyon, McMillian has played a reserve role through the opening seven games and is averaging 8.7 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 1.1 assists per game. He’s now 15-for-35 (42.9 percent) on 3-pointers for the season.

“I’ve said all along that Chance McMillian is one of the best shooters in the country,” Tech head coach Grant McCasland said during the postgame press conference. “I thought he came off the bench and gave us a good lift.”

Texas Tech has now had 21 Big 12 Newcomer of the Week selections in program history, dating back to Rayford Young earning the award twice during the 1996-97 season. McMillian is the first to earn the award since Bryson Williams received the selection on February 21, 2022, for the second time that season.

McMillian’s eight 3-pointers were a career-high and one off the Texas Tech single-game record established by Alan Voskuil in 2009 against Kansas. For his career, McMillian has 731 points, 257 rebounds, and has made 123 3-pointers through 98 games in his collegiate career. McMillian has an additional year of eligibility next season.

Along with McMillian, TCU’s Emanuel Miller was named the Big 12 Player of the Week. It was the second career honor for Miller while McMillian was recognized for the first time this season. Miller scored a career-high 29 points, including a buzzer-beating game-winning 3-pointer to lead TCU to an 84-83 win at Georgetown on Saturday. The senior forward made a career-high 12 field goals on 18 attempts and matched a career-high with three 3-pointers made on four attempts. In a win over Houston Baptist, Miller led the Frogs with 19 points. For the week, the general studies major averaged 24 points, 4.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists and one block over two games.
