Gundacker shines at Big 12-SEC Challenge
STILLWATER, Okla. – Freshman Jonas Gundacker led the Red Raiders with two singles wins as Texas Tech completed the Big 12-SEC Challenge on Sunday afternoon. Hosted by Oklahoma State, the Red Raiders competed against student-athletes from SEC schools Texas A&M, Tennessee and Alabama over the past three days.
Gundacker posted a team-best two singles wins on the weekend after he first got a victory against a Texas A&M Aggie. Facing Togan Tokac, a sophomore transfer from the University of Florida, Gundacker would win in straight sets when he took the first set in a tiebreaker without allowing the Aggie a single point, 7-6 (0), before sealing the victory with a 6-2 second set.
Gundacker then recorded a huge win against one of the top newcomers in college tennis this year. His next opponent was Derek Pham (Oklahoma State), who is 10th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Newcomer/Freshman rankings. The Red Raider only allowed the Cowboy to win four games in another straight-set victory, 6-2, 6-2.
Junior Tyler Stewart got Tech’s second ranked victory of the fall after defeating Alabama’s Enzo Aguiard, who checks in at No. 78 in ITA preseason singles rankings and played primarily at court two for the Crimson Tide last spring. Stewart would go up a break and hold on to win, 6-4, in set one, before dominating in the second set, 6-2, to claim the match.
Up next, the Red Raiders stay in Oklahoma for the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa on Sept. 30 through Oct. 8.
