BYU defeats Lady Raiders in Provo

PROVO, Utah  Both Jasmine Shavers and Bailey Maupin posted double-figure games, but the Texas Tech Lady Raiders fell to the BYU Cougars, 60-46, on Saturday evening at the Marriott Center.

Shavers led the team in scoring with 16 points for her 15th double-digit scoring game of the year. Maupin added 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting, while adding three rebounds and two assists to record her team-best 18th double-figure scoring game of the year. Freshman Loghan Johnson had a good offensive game as she collected eight points on 50 percent shooting.

Sophomore Kilah Freelon posted her eighth 10+ rebound game of the season after leading the team with 10, followed by senior Jordyn Merritt with seven of her own. Both Freelon and Merritt added two blocks apiece.

Maupin began the scoring with a 3-pointer in the first quarter to take an early lead. BYU scored the next seven points until Merritt hit another one from beyond the arc to make it 7-6. The Cougars answered with a 6-0 run before Shavers stopped it with a driving layup. Shavers then hit another three for Tech before the period ended, but BYU held on to the lead by a score of 17-11.

Shavers continued the scoring for the Lady Raiders when she connected with two free throws at the start of the second quarter. BYU posted a short 4-0 run, then Maupin drilled a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to make it 23-16. Johnson came in and made a layup through traffic. The Cougars and Lady Raiders traded points for the remainder of the quarter until Tech ended the period on a 5-0 run to cut into the lead, 28-24.

Freelon made two free throws to begin the second half to cut the BYU lead the two. The Cougars were able to record the next five points before Merritt made a turnaround jumper. Maupin was able to hit a floater, then Johnson and Shavers scored layups to make the score 38-34, BYU. Johnson kept up the momentum after she hit a 3-pointer to make it 40-37. However, the Cougars closed out the quarter on a 5-1 run to lead 45-38.

BYU scored a 3-pointer to begin the final quarter before Maupin drew a foul on a three-point shot. She made two free throws, then followed it with a layup to make it 48-42. Tech wouldn’t score for over five minutes after that as BYU went on a 9-0 run to take a 57-43 lead. Shavers would make the next four points after recording a couple free throws and a fastbreak layup with 2:10 left. The Cougars would hold off the Lady Raiders in the remainder of the game to win it, 60-46.
