Lady Raiders fall to No. 10 Texas

LUBBOCK, Texas  Sophomore Bailey Maupin posted her 14th double-figure scoring game, but the Texas Tech Lady Raiders were defeated by the No. 10-ranked Texas Longhorns, 74-47, on Wednesday night at the United Supermarkets Arena.

Maupin scored a team-leading 16 points against the Longhorns (14-1, 1-1 Big 12) while adding five rebounds, four assists and a steal for Tech (12-3, 1-1 Big 12). Sophomore Jasmine Shavers added nine points and three points for the Lady Raiders.

Senior Jordyn Merritt recorded a seven-point game with a team-best six boards and three blocks, making it her second game of the year with three blocks and eighth game leading the Lady Raiders in that category.

In the first quarter, Kilah Freelon recorded two blocks in the first five minutes of the period as the Longhorns and Lady Raiders were tied at 6-6 to begin the period. Texas would go on to score 15 consecutive points for the 21-6 advantage before the Lady Raiders got a steal from Maupin and a layup from Merritt to stop the momentum. Forty-five seconds later, Merritt hit a 3-pointer in the final minute as Texas would lead 23-11 after one.

Both teams scored early in the second period as Maupin hit a jumper at the 8:55 mark for the Lady Raiders. A scoring drought ensued as neither team would score for almost three minutes until Texas got a layup to lead 27-13. Maupin connected with a couple from the free throw line and Shavers scored a 16-foot jump shot to make it 32-17 before the Horns answered with a 3-pointer. At 1:38, Shavers made one from behind the arc, then made two free throws at the end of the quarter as Texas took a 40-23 lead heading into the half.

Texas got the first five points in the third period before Maupin drew a foul on a made layup, then connected with her free throw to convert the three-point play. The Horns would hit another jumper, but Maupin responded with a 3-pointer at the 6:14 mark. With a little over a minute left, Rhyle McKinney came in and immediately hit back-to-back 3-pointers before the quarter ended as Texas led 61-39.

The Horns started the final quarter on a 6-2 run before Maupin scored a free throw and a 3-pointer and Merritt followed that with a second-chance layup as Tech was down 67-47. Texas would score the next seven points of the game to win it by a 74-47 score.
