Los Hermanos Familia to Award Scholarships to Encourage Retention & Success

Los Hermanos Familia (LHF) a 501 (c)(3) takes pride in education. They believe that their organization’s role is in part to increase the habitus for area families by fostering an environment that offers them more exploration and programs that provide knowledge, life experiences, and opportunity, as well as educational support.

That’s why LHF established an Education Committee to initiate and plan effective education programs and lead scholarship efforts. Since 2016, LHF has provided over $78,000 in scholarships to area students.

On Thursday, November 2, 2023, Los Hermanos Familia with its University Partners – Wayland Baptist University, Lubbock Christian University, West Texas A & M, and South Plains College, will award $25,000. In addition, an additional five students will be recognized for receiving $1,000 scholarships from Education Advocates Rosa & Julio Llanas, Frank Garcia & Christy Martinez-Garcia, Josh & Jessica Ortiz, and Jarrett Thornton to students currently attending one of these universities to encourage retention and demonstrate their support to the students.

While the University scholarships were open to any current male college student in the Lubbock area, Latino males continue to lag behind their non-Latino peers in obtaining their college degrees. Therefore, LHF is committed to increasing attention to education by providing tools and addressing issues impacting individuals and families.

In addition, their spring scholarships were open to students male or female from the Lubbock area.

“Education is the way to improve one’s quality of life, and therefore we want to offer tools to students who have struggled financially, or as retention support for men who balance work, family, or are first-generation students to obtain that goal,” said Rosa Llanas, LHF’s Education Chair explaining that Los Hermanos Familia not only offers programs and events to the community they also know that education is the way to achieve financial stability and a brighter future.

Llanas said that the recipients are working on undergrad degrees, Masters, and Ph.D. programs and were asked to write an essay on how the scholarship will impact their education goals.

The event will be a reception-style pep rally offering a Motivational Moment from the Lubbock High School (LHS) Football Coach, Juan Rodriguez, along with the Estacado High School Band Percussion, the Lubbock High School ROTC, as well as some of the LHS Cheerleaders.

Representatives from the universities and the scholarship donors will be on hand.

She added that Los Hermanos Familia will open up another round of scholarships next year to be awarded in 2024.

Area Students will receive scholarship awards totaling $30,000.
