The Week of “Vamos a Pescar, Let’s Go Fishing” Notes

Below are some notes to make for the “Vamos a Pescar, Let’s Go Fishing” event this week:

  • The “Vamos a Pescar, Let’s Go Fishing” Event is being held for the 14th year!
  • It was formed after a last request to go fishing from an area farmer, who died the next day. (Click here for the story)
  • The event is organized by Los Hermanos Familia a group founded by Christy Martinez-Garcia and Frank Garcia in 2014.
  • Our objective is “Strengthening Families, Building Community.”
  • The event is FREE to encourage families to take time to bond, and not have financial burdens. ADULTS MUST BE ACCOMPANIED BY A CHILD.
  • The event will be held Sat. August 5, 2023, from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • The Buddy Holly Lake will be cleaned by our volunteers on Wednesday, August 2, 2023, at 6 p.m.
  • The lake will be stocked with hungry catfish. on Thurs., August 3rd. An email will be sent to give you the time the truck arrives from Oklahoma.
  • Rain or shine the fishing event will be held – only lightning can keep us from fishing.
  • Families are encouraged to pre-register this helps us to get a food count. With food costs doubling from last year this is especially important. We appreciate your help in encouraging this message.
  • Lunch is free, but only to the first 1,300 registered participants. Participants have an option of a hotdog, burger, PBJ, chips, and a drink. Followed by chilled watermelon served by our volunteers. Members of the media are encouraged to join us.
  • Live Deomstrations and Meet & Greets will be held starting at 9 a.m. in the fishing village area. Families are also encouraged to utilize the HealthBeat equipment, a program of Los Hermanos Familia.
  • Frankie the Fish is our mascot and will also be on site.
  • A children’s area offers free activities for children who are fishing. They can build their own tackle box, practice with our Backyard Bass game, have a snowcone, or enjoy the presentations which include the Science Spectrum, the Lubbock K-9 Unit, the Mounted Patrol, and more!
  • Families can also access our free Digital Library another project of Los Hermanos familia.
  • This year the last hour will give participants the Foam Finale!
  • We also observe the Knights of Columbus Family Week at our event! As well as will also have the Purple Hearts of the South Plains on site to answer questions from Veterans and their families.
  • Our Swag Bags are provided to the first 500 adults and the first 500 children that check-in.
  • BY THE WAY, OUR VOLUNTEERS WILL BE WEARING SAFETY VESTS THAT READ “VOLUNTEER” ON THE BACK
  • All members of the media should check in and ask for Christy (806)544-6526 or Amaris (806)831-6072.
  • Again, it’s not too late to pre-register. Families can pre-register before they arrive at www.letsgofishinglubbock.com
