No. 21 Baylor beats the Lady Raiders in Waco

WACO, Texas  The Texas Tech Lady Raiders dropped their game to the No. 21-ranked Baylor Bears on Sunday afternoon at the Foster Pavilion by a 61-32 score.

In the game, sophomore Bailey Maupin led the Lady Raiders (16-11, 5-9 Big 12) in scoring with nine points, followed by freshman Kelly Mora and sophomore Jada Wynn with six each. Mora also posted a career-best five rebounds and two steals against the Bears (19-6, 8-6 Big 12). In addition, three Lady Raiders tallied four rebounds apiece in Wynn, Kilah Freelon and Jasmine Shavers.

Baylor started the first quarter making the first two buckets of the game. The Lady Raiders were able to cut the deficit in half when Maupin connected with a mid-range jumper. However, the Bears would score five straight to lead by a 9-2 score heading into the media timeout. Coming out of it, the Bears would immediately score four points forcing a Texas Tech timeout. With a minute left, Freelon was able to get the and one play, but the Bears led 17-4 at the end of the period.

In the second quarter, Shavers hit a 3-pointer in the first minute, but Baylor scored right after with a jumper. At the 7:32 mark, the Bears scored another three for a 22-7 advantage, but both teams would go on a four-minute scoring drought. The Lady Raiders went almost seven minutes without scoring before Freelon hit two free throws. Mora came in late in the period and was able to grab a steal, two rebounds and a bucket. Tech then closed out the period with a 4-0 run as Baylor led, 27-13.

Shavers scored immediately in the third quarter to push the Lady Raiders’ run to 6-0. But, that would be the only basket for Tech over four minutes of play as Baylor went on to score 12 straight points while forcing five turnovers in that span. Jada Wynn was able to stop the Baylor run after scoring a 3-pointer, but the Bears ended the period with six consecutive points to lead 45-18.

Baylor scored the first four points in the final quarter until Mora and Maupin made back-to-back jumpers. A 6-0 Bears run ensued, but Mora posted another jumper off the glass to cut the deficit to 55-24. Maupin followed with a 3-pointer and a jumper through traffic, but Baylor immediately scored a layup to end the run. Wynn connected with another from behind the arc with 1:54 left, but the Bears would come out with the win by a 61-32 score.
