Texas Tech falls at TCU

FORT WORTH, Texas – Sophomore Jasmine Shavers shot .714 from behind the arc, but the Texas Tech Lady Raiders dropped their game to the TCU Horned Frogs, 73-52, on Wednesday night at Schollmaier Arena.

Shavers went 5-of-7 from the three-point line as she had 18 points. In addition, she posted her 23rd double-figure scoring game this year for the Lady Raiders (16-14, 5-12 Big 12) while tallying four rebounds against TCU (19-9, 6-11 Big 12). Sophomore Bailey Maupin also had a double-digit night, her team-leading 24th of the year, with a Lady Raider best 19 points. Both Shavers and Maupin recorded career-highs in 3-pointers made with five and four, respectively.

Leading Texas Tech in rebounding was Jada Wynn, who picked up a career-high six boards, while freshman Loghan Johnson totaled a career-best four assists and Maupin added five rebounds. The Lady Raiders also made 11 three-pointers against TCU, making it the fifth time this season totaling 10 or more threes in a Big 12 game.

In the first quarter, TCU started the scoring with a layup before Shavers connected with a 3-pointer to give Tech the lead. The Horned Frogs answered with a 7-0 run before Shavers hit another three. Following that, Jada Wynn scored one from behind the arc to tie it at 9-all. But, TCU would get the next five points heading into the media timeout with the 14-9 advantage. Kelly Mora ended the TCU run with a jumper, but the Horned Frogs closed the period with a 21-11 lead.

Maupin connected with Tech’s fourth 3-pointer of the game to begin the quarter. TCU, however, got a layup and a three to answer forcing a Lady Raider timeout. Coming out of it, Mora hit a jumper, then Shavers scored her third 3-pointer of the half. But, TCU closed out the remainder of the period on a 14-0 run to lead 42-21 heading into the half.

The Lady Raiders began the third quarter with a Maupin 3-pointer. TCU immediately responded with two of its own before Maupin made another to make the score 48-27. Both teams wouldn’t score for over two minutes until the Horned Frogs made a layup. After the media timeout, Tech went on a 5-0 run when Maupin scored a three and Rhyle McKinney connected with a layup. At the 2:42 mark, Shavers fought for an offensive rebound then immediately made a corner 3-pointer but that would be all for the Lady Raiders in the period as TCU led 56-35.

The Horned Frogs opened the fourth quarter with a 4-0 run before McKinney nailed a triple. TCU scored four of the next five points until it was Shavers who once again hit a 3-pointer, the team’s 11th of the game, to make it 62-42 right before the media timeout. Maupin scored four quick points with two minutes left, but the Horned Frogs maintained their lead for the 73-50 win.
