Texas Tech sits in fourth after 36 holes at Chevron Collegiate
HUMBLE, Texas — The Texas Tech women’s golf team sits in fourth place at the Chevron Collegiate following the opening two rounds contested at the Golf Club of Houston on Monday. The Red Raiders fired a 14-under-par 274 in round one and led the field after the first 18 holes but dropped to fourth following a second-round 1-under-par 287, finishing the day 15-under-par (561).
Texas Tech’s first-round 14-under-par remained the lowest round scored by the 16-team field after the first two rounds; it was also the Red Raiders’ lowest team score of the spring season.
Propelling the Red Raiders’ strong opening round was Kylee Loewe, who fired a career-low 5-under-par 67. After recording a bogey on hole no. 13, where she began her day, the junior from Scottsdale, Arizona fired six birdies in round one, including four consecutive birdies to end the round. Loewe followed round one with a 3-over-par 75, dropping her into a tie for 34th.
Gala Dumez also had a strong start, notching three birdies in her first five holes en route to an impressive 4-under-par 68 in round one. Dumez carried this momentum into her second round of the day, firing a tap-in eagle on her second hole of the round. The eagle by Dumez on hole no. 13 was the first by a Red Raider since Lauren Zaretsky’s eagle during round two of the UCF Challenge. Despite three bogeys in four holes on the front nine, back-to-back birdies on hole no. 8 and hole no. 9 helped the senior from Bordeaux, France to a 2-under-par 70 in round two.
Dumez finds herself atop the Red Raider leaderboard at 6-under-par (138) and tied for 15th out of 89 players entering Tuesday’s final round.
In addition to Loewe and Dumez, Lauren Zaretsky and Maja Ambroziak enjoyed solid performances in Monday’s opening rounds. Zaretsky fired back-to-back 2-under-par 70’s, including an impressive bogey-free second round, to finish the day at 4-under-par (140) and tied for 24th place on the individual leaderboard. Ambroziak shook off a double bogey at hole no. 16 with five birdies, including four on the back nine, to finish round one with a 3-under-par 69. The freshman from Poland proceeded to record an even-par 72 in round two to finish her day at 3-under-par (141).
Monday’s opening round marked the first time all four of the Red Raiders’ countable scores were below par since the first round of the Jim West Challenge last October. Despite slowing down in the second round, the Red Raiders sit just eight strokes back of the lead entering Tuesday’s third and final round. Tech will aim to catch no. 14 Texas A&M and SMU, who both sit in first place at 23-under-par.
The Red Raiders will tee off round three of the Chevron Collegiate at 8 a.m. on Wednesday at the Golf Club of Houston.
