Cincinnati defeats Lady Raiders at home

LUBBOCK, Texas  The Texas Tech Lady Raiders fell to the Cincinnati Bearcats, 68-56, on Saturday afternoon at United Supermarkets Arena.

For the Lady Raiders (16-13, 5-11 Big 12), both Bailey Maupin and Jasmine Shavers recorded double-figure scoring games, their 23rd and 22nd of the year, respectively. Maupin led the team with 15 points on 5-of-11 shooting and three rebounds against Cincinnati (13-14, 5-11 Big 12).

Shavers added 10 points while tying for the team-lead in rebounds with Loghan Johnson and Ashley Chevalier as they all totaled five apiece. Rhyle McKinney was able to hit some late 3-pointers in the game to tally nine points while Kelly Mora tied her career-high in points with eight.

Shavers scored the first bucket of the game with a layup through traffic, but the Bearcats would answer with the next eight points for the 8-2 advantage. Maupin recorded two layups, then Shavers hit a 3-pointer on the fastbreak to get within two. Johnson then scored a layup with a minute left as Cincinnati led, 13-11

The Bearcats started the second quarter on a 4-0 run to force a Tech timeout. The Lady Raiders got two free throws from Maupin before McKinney made a wide-open three thanks to a Johnson offensive rebound. However, Cincinnati went on an 8-0 run to force another Texas Tech timeout as they held the 29-16 lead. Tech would get a jumper from Mora and a couple of free throws from Shavers to close the first half down, 35-21.

Cincinnati opened the second half on a 9-1 run to force Texas Tech to take a timeout. Johnson would stop the run with a layup at the 7:51 mark as the Bearcats led, 44-24. Tech would hold Cincinnati scoreless for almost three minutes, while making four free throws in that span. At 3:28, Chevalier grabbed a steal then made a fastbreak layup, followed by a 3-pointer by Maupin as Cincinnati held the lead, 56-37.

In the fourth quarter, Mora scored a layup on the first possession of the period, but Cincinnati followed with the next three points. Both teams went on a scoring drought until Maupin connected with a layup at the 7:18 mark. With five and a half minutes left in the game, the Lady Raiders went on a rampage from beyond the arc as Mora and McKinney scored three 3-pointers between the two of them to cut the deficit to 13 and force a Cincinnati timeout. However, the Cats held on to win the game by a 68-56 score.

The Lady Raiders have their final road game of the regular season as they head to Fort Worth, Texas to take on the TCU Horned Frogs on Wednesday, February 28 at 6:30 p.m.
