Comegys’ 63 leads No. 24 Tech at Amer Ari Intercollegiate

KOHALA COAST, Hawai’i — The No. 24 Texas Tech men’s golf team sits in third place after Thursday’s opening round of the Amer Ari Intercollegiate at Mauna Lani Resort Golf Club. With a course that played under par with a 70.82 average in round one, the Red Raiders’ Matthew Comegys, Tyran Snyders and Calum Scott feasted each firing rounds in the 60s aiding to a blistering 21-under-par 267 team score.

Comegys shot a career-low 9-under-par 63 on Thursday. A bogey-free round that included a pair of birdies and an eagle on the front nine and five birdies on the backside. His eagle on the par-5, No. 7 was just one of four scored by the 124-player field. Comegys’ effort has him tied for second place, and one stroke behind individual leader Preston Stout of Oklahoma State.

Snyders, who is fresh off a Top 5 finish and is a recent addition to PGA Tour University’s Top 25, joins Comegys in the Amer Ari Top 10. Snyders shot a 6-under-par 66 on Thursday and is tied for eighth place. Tech’s third countable score in the 60s was Scott who posted a 4-under-par 68 and is tied for 22nd.

The Red Raiders’ fourth score was registered by Baard Skogen who fired a 2-under-par 70 to give Texas Tech its 21-under-par 267. Skogen is tied for 49th in a crowded, yet talented field.

Freshman Price Hill, who competed as an individual, was the Red Raiders’ fourth man to register a round in the 60s but it did not count toward the team score in the effort. It was Hill’s best round to date as a Red Raider.

The Amer Ari resumes on Friday with the second round. It will once again be a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m. local time. The Red Raiders will be paired with members of the Pepperdine, Texas and UCLA golf teams.
