No. 6 Tech in the hunt for team title in Houston

HUMBLE, Texas — The No. 6 Texas Tech men’s golf team sits four strokes behind the lead after the first two rounds of the All-American Intercollegiate, hosted at the Golf Club of Houston, following 36 holes of play on Monday. The 36-hole day was the first for the Red Raiders this spring as they rebounded nicely in round two, carding an even-par 288 after an opening round 8-over-par 296.

Sam Houston is the leader, sitting 4-over-par (580), besting the Red Raiders’ 8-over-par (584). UNLV also shares second place with Texas Tech after Monday’s first two rounds in what is a 20-team tournament.

Calum Scott led the Red Raiders on Monday with consistent play, firing an even-par first round and a 1-under-par second round. The junior is tied for fifth place in a field of 100 players at 1-under-par.

Matthew Comegys, who entered Monday firing nine straight par or better rounds, registered a 2-over-par in the first round but answered back by going 1-under-par (71) in the second round. He is tied for 11th after 36 holes at 1-over-par.

Tyran Snyders, the Red Raiders scoring leader owning a 69.9 average this season, had a season-high 7-over-par 79 in the first round. In the second round, he fired a 2-under-par 70 to finish 5-over-par on Monday. He sits in a tie for 34th. Others in action, Vicente Marzilio and Baard Skogen, shot 8-over-par over the first 36 holes.

The All-American Intercollegiate, an event that is also hosting an individual circuit on a separate course, had a pair of Red Raiders highlight the 40-man individual field. Tim Wiedemeyer and Charlie DeLong share the event lead alongside a third player in Baylor’s Zach Heffernan, who each shot a 36-hole even-par 144.

Texas Tech wraps up the All-American Intercollegiate on Tuesday morning, beginning with a shotgun start at 8 a.m.
